After spending several wonderful days in Mexico City, we made the scenic four-hour drive to San Miguel de Allende, and from the moment we arrived, it completely stole our hearts. I've traveled to many beautiful places around the world, but there is something incredibly special about San Miguel. Walking through its charming streets felt as though we had been transported to a centuries-old European village — cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, and magnificent terracotta-colored churches rising above the skyline. Everywhere you look feels like a postcard waiting to be photographed.
Where We Stayed: Rosewood San Miguel de Allende
If there is one hotel that defines luxury in San Miguel de Allende, it is the Rosewood. Quite honestly, it is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed in anywhere in the world. Designed to resemble an elegant old Spanish hacienda, the property feels like a peaceful oasis tucked away from the lively streets of town. Lush gardens, bubbling fountains, colorful flowers, stone pathways, and beautifully landscaped courtyards create an atmosphere that is both luxurious and incredibly relaxing. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed, from the handcrafted architecture to the warm, welcoming service. Even after spending the day exploring town, we found ourselves looking forward to returning to the hotel simply to enjoy its peaceful surroundings. Whether you're relaxing by the pool, enjoying breakfast in the gardens, or watching the sunset from one of the terraces, the Rosewood offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly complements the beauty of San Miguel.

Exploring the Historic Center
One of the greatest joys of visiting San Miguel is simply wandering without an agenda. The streets are filled with charming boutiques showcasing handcrafted jewelry, textiles, pottery, leather goods, home décor, and artwork created by talented local artisans and designers. Rather than large chain stores, you'll discover one-of-a-kind treasures that make meaningful souvenirs to bring home. The historic center has such a warm and inviting atmosphere. Families stroll through the plazas enjoying ice cream, children play while musicians perform nearby, and couples linger at cafés watching the world go by. The entire city feels relaxed, walkable, and incredibly welcoming. It's the kind of destination where you can spend hours getting wonderfully lost.

A Cooking Class We Wish We Had Time For
One activity we unfortunately didn't have time to experience was a traditional Mexican cooking class. It's consistently recommended as one of the best experiences in San Miguel and is high on my list for our next visit. Learning to prepare authentic regional dishes while visiting local markets sounds like such a wonderful way to experience the city's culture beyond sightseeing.
Sanaz's tip: Book a cooking class in advance — the best ones fill up quickly and often include a morning market visit before you cook.
One of the Best Times to Visit: Día de los Muertos
If your schedule allows, one of the most magical times to visit San Miguel de Allende is in late October and early November during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Despite its name, this is not a sad holiday. Instead, it is one of Mexico's most beautiful and meaningful celebrations — a joyful tradition honoring loved ones who have passed away. The city comes alive with vibrant marigold flowers, candlelit altars, colorful papel picado banners, music, parades, and families gathering to celebrate the lives of those they have lost. Locals dress in elaborate traditional clothing and beautifully painted calavera (sugar skull) makeup, creating an atmosphere that is both festive and deeply moving. San Miguel de Allende is considered one of the most spectacular places in Mexico to experience this celebration. Hotels book well in advance, and the entire city transforms into a living work of art filled with color, culture, and tradition. It's a bucket-list experience that I hope to return for one day.
Sanaz's tip: If you're planning a Día de los Muertos visit, book your hotel at least six months in advance — the Rosewood sells out early.

Luna Rooftop
Live music & tightrope performers at sunsetLocated atop the Rosewood, Luna Rooftop offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of San Miguel's skyline. As the sun begins to set and the city glows in shades of gold and pink, it becomes one of the most magical places to spend an evening. During our visit there was live music along with performers walking across tightropes high above the crowd, creating an unforgettable atmosphere that was both elegant and entertaining.
Pirules
Creative cuisine in an elegant settingPirules quickly became one of our favorite dining experiences. The restaurant beautifully combines creative cuisine with a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for a memorable dinner.
Rosewood Rooftop
