Some places live up to the photos. Slovenia completely exceeded them. I still remember the first time I came across a photograph of a stunning turquoise lake with a tiny island in the middle, a charming church, and hot air balloons floating overhead. I had never heard of Lake Bled, but I immediately knew I had to see it for myself.

Arriving at Lake Bled
The drive from Salzburg to Lake Bled is absolutely beautiful, winding through the Austrian Alps before crossing into Slovenia. By the time we arrived at our hotel, we couldn't wait to see the lake. We quickly dropped off our luggage and walked straight to the shoreline. Nothing had prepared me for how beautiful it really was. The water glowed with an almost unreal turquoise color, surrounded by lush green forests and towering mountains. Right in the center of the lake sat the tiny Bled Island, crowned by the beautiful Church of the Assumption. It truly looked like something from a fairy tale. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking the lakeside promenade, stopping often to admire the ever-changing views before enjoying dinner at one of the restaurants overlooking the water. Every angle seemed worthy of a postcard.

Bled Castle
The following morning we visited Bled Castle (Blejski Grad), perched dramatically on a cliff nearly 400 feet above the lake. Dating back over 1,000 years, it is the oldest castle in Slovenia and offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Europe. We explored the castle grounds, wandered through the historic courtyards, and then enjoyed coffee overlooking the lake from the castle terrace. Even if you aren't particularly interested in castles, the panoramic views alone make this one of the highlights of visiting Lake Bled. One of my favorite meals of the trip was at the castle restaurant. The food was excellent, but the view was unforgettable.
Sanaz's tip: Book the castle restaurant for lunch rather than dinner — the light over the lake in the afternoon is extraordinary and you'll have the views to yourself before the evening crowds arrive.
Rowing to Bled Island
Later that afternoon we rented a small rowboat and slowly made our way across the calm lake toward the tiny island. It was one of the most peaceful experiences of the trip. Visitors can also take one of the traditional wooden Pletna boats, but rowing ourselves made the experience even more memorable. Once on the island we climbed the famous 99 stone steps leading to the Church of the Assumption. Inside hangs the legendary 16th-century wishing bell. Local tradition says that if you ring the bell and make a wish, it will come true. Whether or not you believe the legend, the island itself is magical. Nearby, our kids spent hours enjoying the floating inflatable water park, making it a destination that truly offers something for every member of the family.
Sanaz's tip: Rent a rowboat rather than taking the Pletna — the slower pace and the freedom to stop wherever you like makes the crossing far more memorable.
Exploring the Lake by Bike
The next day we rented bicycles and rode around the lake. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, although during peak summer it can become fairly crowded with pedestrians, so be prepared to ride slowly and carefully along parts of the path. Still, biking offers a wonderful way to experience the lake from every angle while stopping for coffee, ice cream, or photos whenever you like. Before leaving, don't miss Slovenia's most famous dessert — Bled Cream Cake (Kremsnita). Layers of puff pastry, vanilla custard, and whipped cream make it one of the country's signature treats. Every cafe around the lake serves it, but the original is at the Park Hotel.
Sanaz's tip: Go early — the lake path is quietest before 9am and the light on the water is at its most beautiful in the morning.
Day Trip to Lake Bohinj & Triglav National Park
If you visit Lake Bled, don't make the mistake of staying only around the lake. About 25 minutes away lies Lake Bohinj, located inside Triglav National Park, and in many ways it feels even more untouched and wild than Bled. The scenery becomes more rugged, the crowds disappear, and the landscapes become truly spectacular. Our destination was Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica). The hike is short — about 20 to 25 minutes — but don't underestimate it. You'll climb over 500 stone and wooden steps through a shaded forest before reaching the famous waterfall. The waterfall itself is unlike any I've seen before, bursting directly out of the limestone cliff in a dramatic double cascade before plunging into a brilliant emerald-green pool below. The hike turned into a memorable family adventure when one of our daughters briefly wandered ahead, sending us racing back and forth along the trail searching for her. Thankfully, we found her safe and smiling — but it's certainly a story we still laugh about today.

More Activities Around Lake Bled
If you have extra time, there are plenty of adventures nearby. Vintgar Gorge is one of the most beautiful walks in Slovenia. Wooden boardwalks wind above emerald-green rapids through a narrow limestone gorge before ending at the beautiful Sum Waterfall. It is manageable for most ages and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the region. Straza Bled Summer Toboggan offers incredible lake views while racing downhill — a guaranteed hit with children of any age. For thrill-seekers, the Sava Dolinka Zipline provides breathtaking views over the alpine valley and is one of the more memorable ways to see the landscape from above. And of course, no visit to Lake Bled is complete without trying the Kremsnita at least once — or twice.
Sanaz's tip: Vintgar Gorge gets very crowded by mid-morning in summer. Arrive right when it opens or go late afternoon for a much quieter experience.
Where to Stay at Lake Bled
Lake Bled offers accommodations for every style of traveler. For timeless elegance, Grand Hotel Toplice offers classic lakeside luxury with private lake access, thermal pools, and beautiful balconies overlooking the water. It is the grande dame of Lake Bled and the most iconic address on the shore. For boutique luxury, Adora Luxury Hotel sits directly on the lakeshore inside a beautifully restored villa with intimate rooms and incredible views. It feels more personal and less formal than the larger hotels. Vila Bled is a fascinating choice for history lovers — it was the former summer residence of President Tito, surrounded by peaceful parkland with private lake access. The setting is extraordinary and the property has a quiet, almost cinematic atmosphere. Personally, I think four nights is the perfect amount of time. It gives you enough opportunity to relax, enjoy the lake, take a day trip into Triglav National Park, and truly experience the slower pace of this beautiful region.

Ljubljana — Slovenia's Charming Capital
Only about 45 minutes from Lake Bled is Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, making it an easy day trip if you prefer not to change hotels. We honestly weren't expecting much. Instead, we completely fell in love with it. By pure luck, we happened to arrive during one of the city's famous food festivals. The entire pedestrian-only Old Town was buzzing with energy. Music filled the streets. Locals and tourists crowded outdoor cafes. Families strolled along the river enjoying ice cream while friends gathered over coffee or local beer. It felt vibrant, youthful, and incredibly welcoming. Ljubljana quickly became one of the most pleasant surprises of our European travels. The famous Triple Bridge, designed by architect Joze Plecnik, connects the medieval Old Town with the modern city center and serves as the heart of Ljubljana. Nearby, the iconic Dragon Bridge, guarded by its famous green dragon statues, has become the city's symbol and one of the best photo spots. We also loved wandering through the Central Market, browsing local cheeses, honey, fresh produce, and artisan goods before continuing our walk along the Ljubljanica River. Honestly, our favorite activity wasn't checking attractions off a list — it was simply soaking up the atmosphere. Ljubljana is one of those rare cities where the greatest pleasure comes from wandering without a plan.

Final Thoughts
Slovenia completely exceeded every expectation we had. It combines the beauty of the Swiss Alps, the charm of Austria, the warmth of Italy, and a relaxed atmosphere that somehow remains undiscovered by much of the world. Lake Bled is every bit as magical as the photographs suggest, while Ljubljana may be one of Europe's most underrated capitals — beautiful, lively, walkable, and filled with wonderful cafes and riverside restaurants. If you're planning a trip through Austria, northern Italy, or Croatia, I cannot recommend adding Slovenia enough. What started as a spontaneous detour became one of the biggest highlights of our entire European adventure — and it's a destination I would happily return to again and again.
