If you're looking for a Caribbean vacation that combines beautiful beaches, island hopping, boating adventures, and unforgettable turquoise water, St. Thomas and St. John make an incredible family destination. What I loved most about this trip was that every day felt completely different. We explored new beaches, drove our rental car onto a ferry to another island, chartered a private yacht into the British Virgin Islands, and discovered some of the most beautiful water we've ever seen.

Getting There
Traveling from Southern California to the Caribbean can be a long journey, so we decided to make it easier on our children. We flew from Orange County to Dallas, spent the night there, and then continued on to St. Thomas the following morning. Breaking up the trip made a huge difference, and everyone arrived refreshed instead of exhausted. If you're traveling with younger children, I would definitely recommend considering an overnight stop if your schedule allows.
Sanaz's tip: An overnight stop in Dallas or another hub city makes the journey to St. Thomas much more manageable for families with young children.
Staying at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas
For our stay, we chose The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas. The resort itself is beautiful, with spacious pools, well-maintained grounds, comfortable accommodations, and the excellent service you'd expect from a Ritz-Carlton. That said, compared with other Ritz-Carlton properties we've visited around the world, I didn't feel this one reached quite the same level of luxury. The food was very good, but it wasn't particularly memorable, and while the beach at the resort is pleasant, it wasn't the breathtaking Caribbean beach experience I had envisioned. One thing became very clear during our stay: the true beauty of St. Thomas is found beyond the resort.
Sanaz's tip: The Ritz is a comfortable and reliable base, but don't plan to stay on property all day. The island's best beaches and experiences are waiting to be explored.
Rent a Car
If you're comfortable driving on the left side of the road, renting a car is absolutely worth it. Some of the island's most spectacular beaches are scattered across St. Thomas, and having your own transportation gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace instead of staying in one place. Every day felt like discovering another hidden gem.
Sanaz's tip: Driving on the left takes a little getting used to, but the roads are manageable. A rental car unlocks the entire island and is essential for beach hopping.
Magens Bay
One of the first beaches we visited was the famous Magens Bay, which is consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. There's no question that it's a stunning setting, with calm water and a long crescent of soft white sand. Unfortunately, our experience wasn't quite what we expected. The beach was extremely crowded during our visit, and there happened to be a large number of jellyfish in the water. Several members of our family were stung while swimming, which definitely put a damper on the day. Although I'm glad we saw it, Magens Bay ultimately wasn't our favorite beach on the island.
Sanaz's tip: Visit Magens Bay early in the morning before the cruise ship crowds arrive, and ask locals about jellyfish conditions before swimming.
Don't Miss St. John
One of the highlights of our vacation was taking the car ferry from St. Thomas to St. John. The ride is only about twenty minutes, and bringing your rental car makes it incredibly easy to explore the island. St. John has a completely different feel from St. Thomas. Nearly two-thirds of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, creating an atmosphere that's quieter, greener, and wonderfully unspoiled. If you're spending several days in St. Thomas, I think visiting St. John is absolutely essential.
Sanaz's tip: Take the car ferry from Red Hook — it runs frequently and the twenty-minute crossing is part of the adventure. St. John is a completely different world.
Trunk Bay
The main attraction on St. John is Trunk Bay, and it completely lived up to the hype. Without question, it was one of the most beautiful beaches we visited during the entire trip. The sand is powder soft, the water is unbelievably clear, and the surrounding hills create one of the most spectacular settings in the Caribbean. The beach is also famous for its underwater snorkeling trail, making it a wonderful place for both swimmers and snorkelers. If I had to choose only one beach between St. Thomas and St. John, Trunk Bay would easily be my first choice.
Sanaz's tip: Arrive at Trunk Bay when it opens — the light is beautiful in the morning and the beach fills up quickly. The underwater snorkeling trail is marked and easy for all ages.
Charter a Private Yacht
One experience that I cannot recommend enough is chartering a private boat for the day. From St. Thomas, we cruised into the British Virgin Islands, stopping along the way to swim in secluded coves with crystal-clear water. The highlight of the day was visiting The Baths on Virgin Gorda. This incredible natural wonder consists of enormous granite boulders that form hidden caves, tunnels, pools, and beaches unlike anything we've ever seen. Walking through the massive rock formations before emerging onto dazzling white sand and turquoise water was one of the most memorable experiences of our entire vacation. One important tip: don't forget your passports. Although St. Thomas and St. John are U.S. territories, the British Virgin Islands are not, so you'll need your passport for customs and immigration.
Sanaz's tip: Bring passports for everyone — you'll need them to enter the British Virgin Islands. Book your charter in advance, especially in peak season.
Our Favorite Beaches
After several days of exploring, we each developed our own favorites. Trunk Bay (St. John) — Our overall favorite for breathtaking scenery and crystal-clear turquoise water. This is the beach I still think about long after returning home. Koki Beach — Koki Beach became one of our favorite discoveries on St. Thomas. The water here is an incredible shade of turquoise and is usually calm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Tropical fish swim surprisingly close to shore, so even beginners can enjoy snorkeling without venturing far into the water. It has a fun, relaxed local atmosphere and felt much more authentic than some of the busier tourist beaches. Lindquist Beach — Lindquist Beach was another standout. With its powdery white sand, calm crystal-clear water, and significantly fewer crowds than Magens Bay, it offered the peaceful Caribbean beach day we had been looking for. If you enjoy quieter beaches, don't miss this one. Secret Harbour — Secret Harbour is another wonderful option for families. The calm water makes it excellent for swimming, while the snorkeling right off the beach is some of the best on St. Thomas.
Sanaz's tip: Koki Beach and Lindquist Beach are far less crowded than Magens Bay and just as beautiful — they were two of our favorite days on the island.
Is St. Thomas Good for Families?
Absolutely. Families who enjoy boating, snorkeling, beach hopping, and exploring multiple islands will find endless opportunities for adventure. However, I would describe St. Thomas differently than somewhere like Grand Cayman. Grand Cayman is the type of destination where you can happily spend your entire vacation at the resort. St. Thomas is a destination that's meant to be explored. The more you venture beyond your hotel, the more you'll be rewarded with incredible beaches, charming towns, unforgettable boat excursions, and hidden corners of the islands that become the memories you'll treasure most.
Sanaz's tip: Plan at least one full day on St. John and one day on a private yacht charter — those two excursions are what make this trip truly unforgettable.
Final Thoughts
When I think back on our trip, I don't remember sitting by the hotel pool. I remember driving onto the ferry bound for St. John. I remember standing on the impossibly soft sand at Trunk Bay, snorkeling with tropical fish at Koki Beach, discovering the peaceful beauty of Lindquist Beach, and weaving through the giant granite boulders at The Baths in the British Virgin Islands. That's what made this vacation so special. If you're willing to rent a car, hop on a ferry, and spend a day out on the water, St. Thomas and St. John will reward you with some of the most spectacular scenery in the Caribbean. For our family, it wasn't just a beach vacation — it was an adventure, and one we'll never forget.
Sanaz's tip: Five to six nights gives you enough time to explore St. Thomas, do a full day on St. John, and still fit in a private yacht charter to the BVI.
