Where to Stay: A Lesson Learned
When planning our first trip, we had booked the Grand Wailea, largely because it's one of the most well-known family resorts on the island and everyone seemed to rave about the water slides. When we first arrived, I was impressed. The lobby is absolutely breathtaking — grand, elegant, and exactly what you would expect from a luxury Hawaiian resort. We checked in, dropped our bags in our room, and headed straight to the pool. Unfortunately, that's when things quickly changed. The pool area felt more like a crowded water park than a luxury resort. The lounge chairs were inexpensive plastic chairs packed tightly together, there was sand everywhere around the pool deck, and hundreds — if not thousands — of children were running around screaming. It felt chaotic, overcrowded, and honestly not very clean. We decided to at least try the famous water slides since that was one of the main reasons we had booked the resort. The slides were extremely worn, pieces of the slide were rough enough that I actually scraped my back, and the water itself didn't seem particularly clean. Within an hour, I regretted booking the hotel and honestly wondered if we had made a mistake choosing Maui.
Sanaz's tip: The Grand Wailea lobby is stunning, but the pool experience is closer to a water park than a luxury resort. If a peaceful, elegant atmosphere matters to you, look elsewhere.
The Four Seasons Maui at Wailea
My husband and I decided to walk next door to the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea just to see if, by some miracle, they had availability. Luckily, they did. We immediately booked a room, returned to the Grand Wailea, packed our bags, checked out, and moved next door. The trip completely changed after that. The Four Seasons was everything we had hoped our Maui vacation would be. The atmosphere was peaceful, elegant, and luxurious while still being incredibly welcoming to families. The pools were beautiful, the lounge chairs were comfortable and well spaced, service was exceptional, and everything felt meticulously maintained. Our children were only three and four years old at the time, and the Four Seasons had a small waterslide that was perfect for younger kids. While older children looking for large water parks might prefer Grand Wailea, we found the Four Seasons offered the perfect balance between luxury and family fun. One of the things I appreciated most was that although there were plenty of families, the resort never felt chaotic. There were adults relaxing by the serenity pool, families enjoying the children's pool, and enough space that everyone could enjoy themselves without feeling crowded. The beach in front of the hotel is also one of the nicest in Wailea, making it easy to alternate between pool time and the ocean without ever leaving the property. The service at Four Seasons truly deserves special mention. From pool attendants remembering our names to thoughtful touches throughout our stay, it reminded us why Four Seasons has earned its reputation worldwide. There is also a complimentary kids club for younger children, excellent restaurants on-site, and one of the most beautiful sunset settings on the island.
Sanaz's tip: Book the Four Seasons Maui as early as possible — it fills up fast, especially over Christmas and spring break. The beachfront rooms are worth the upgrade.
Other Luxury Hotels Worth Considering
Another resort worth mentioning is the Montage Kapalua Bay. Unlike the traditional hotel setup in Wailea, Montage offers spacious residential-style accommodations with one-, two-, three-, and even four-bedroom residences complete with full kitchens, living rooms, and large lanais. It feels more like staying in an ultra-luxury beachfront home than a hotel room. The pools are stunning, the spa is exceptional, and Kapalua Bay — located directly in front of the resort — is one of Maui's most beautiful beaches, especially for snorkeling with children thanks to its calm waters. If you're traveling with a larger family or planning an extended stay, Montage is one of the finest luxury properties on the island. The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua is another beautiful resort with excellent service and gorgeous grounds. However, because it sits on Maui's northwest coast, it tends to experience more wind and slightly rougher ocean conditions than Wailea. Some travelers actually prefer this cooler climate, especially during the summer months, but if calm beach days are your priority, I personally prefer Wailea. If you're looking for true luxury in Maui, my top recommendations would be the Four Seasons Maui and Montage Kapalua Bay.

Snorkel Molokini Crater
One of the most memorable experiences in Maui is taking a morning catamaran to Molokini Crater. The water is incredibly clear, and you'll swim alongside hundreds of colorful tropical fish. Morning tours typically offer the calmest conditions and the best visibility.
Sanaz's tip: Book the earliest morning departure — the water is calmest before the trade winds pick up, and you'll have the crater nearly to yourselves.
Maui Ocean Center
If you're traveling with younger children, the Maui Ocean Center is well worth visiting. The highlight is the massive underwater tunnel where sharks and rays swim directly overhead. It's educational, interactive, and a great option if the weather isn't perfect.
Sanaz's tip: Plan the Maui Ocean Center for a cloudy morning — save your sunny days for the beach and snorkeling.
Our Favorite Family Beaches
Some of our favorite family beaches include Ulua Beach, Kapalua Bay, and Wailea Beach. The calm morning waters make them perfect for introducing children to snorkeling. Kapalua Bay in particular is exceptionally sheltered and one of the best spots on the island for young snorkelers.
Sanaz's tip: Arrive at the beach early — by 10am the best spots are taken and the sun is intense. Bring a beach tent for shade if you have young children.
Iao Valley State Monument
If you want a break from the beach, Iao Valley offers lush tropical scenery and one of Maui's most iconic landmarks, the Iao Needle. The walk is short, paved, and easy enough for all ages — a wonderful half-morning excursion before heading back to the resort.
Sanaz's tip: Visit Iao Valley in the morning before the afternoon clouds roll in — the valley is often misty by midday, which is beautiful but can obscure the views.
Surfing Goat Dairy
This was such a fun surprise. Kids can feed baby goats, learn about cheese making, and sample locally produced cheeses while enjoying beautiful upcountry Maui. It's a completely different side of the island and one of those unexpected highlights that the kids still talk about.
Sanaz's tip: Book the evening chores tour at Surfing Goat Dairy — kids get to help with the actual goat milking and it's an experience unlike anything else on the island.

Maui's dining scene is exceptional — these two restaurants are absolute must-visits.
Mama's Fish House
Best restaurant in HawaiiNo trip to Maui is complete without dinner at Mama's Fish House. This isn't just one of the best restaurants in Hawaii — it's consistently ranked among the best restaurants in the United States. The setting is absolutely breathtaking. Before dinner, children can play on the small beach outside while looking for sea turtles resting on the shoreline. The menu changes daily depending on what local fishermen caught that morning, and each fish is listed with the name of the fisherman who caught it. Everything is incredibly fresh, and there is also a wonderful children's menu.
Monkeypod Kitchen
Best casual dinnerFor a more casual but still upscale meal, we loved Monkeypod Kitchen. It's lively, family-friendly, and serves excellent farm-to-table Hawaiian cuisine. Their fresh fish tacos, poke, wood-fired pizzas, and famous Mai Tai are all fantastic. There is often live music in the evenings, creating a fun atmosphere that works equally well for couples and families.
Final Thoughts
Maui was the island that made our family fall in love with Hawaii. It offers the perfect combination of beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, incredible restaurants, outdoor adventures, and activities that truly appeal to every age. Looking back, switching from the Grand Wailea to the Four Seasons completely transformed our vacation. While everyone travels differently, we realized that for our family, having a peaceful, luxurious resort where we could genuinely relax was far more valuable than having the biggest water slides. If you're planning your first trip to Hawaii and want a destination that combines natural beauty with unforgettable family memories, Maui is hard to beat. It's one of those places that keeps calling you back long after you've returned home.
